Using non-ghost type moves on normal types don't do damage. Is that just how it's coded (Wood-hammer on Pidgey's, Gumshoos, Pidoves, etc)? Or do moves not have typing as a whole?

It also extends to other types like Bug, Electric or steel. I can't damage weedles, togedamaru, electrodes, etc, but I've been damaged by their tackles which shouldn't happen I assume? I can't damage them with shadow sneak or Wood hammer, my only damaging moves.

The damage depends on ur pokemon type, not on their moves, yet. And groot already said

we're aware of this, the whole battle system might need a redo, will be done at some point in the future

Moves are only considered for stab, for type effectiveness, the type of poke is considered instead of the type of move
